Hebrides Self Catering Accommodation
Throughout the Scottish islands know as the Hebrides there exists the most wonderful selection of self catering accommodation available in the whole of the United Kingdom. Self catering properties range from the truly luxurious to the immensely interesting. One of the most interesting places we have seen that offers self catering accommodation, in the Hebrides, is the wonderful blackhouse at Scarista on the Isle of Harris in the Outer Hebrides (shown left).
At the beginning of the last century blackhouses would have been a very common sight as virtually all Hebrideans lived in this type of accommodation but, by the end of the twentieth century nearly all of them lay in ruins. The blackhouses had been abandoned for a variety of reasons ranging from the forced or chosen emigration of the family to the simple fact that many families chose the newer type of property, known as a whitehouse, as their main residence (the blackhouse may be retained as a storage place but in the main the stone was reused elsewhere).
Happily some blackhouses remain, some have been restored to their late nineteenth century/early twentieth century state while others have been fully renovated. As you can see from the photographs on this page the blackhouse at Scarista is fully renovated to today's standards and is available to hire/rent as self catering accommodation of 5 star quality. The photo to the right shows the living room and the one to the left shows the bedroom. As you can see this Hebrides accommodation is decorated in a typically Hebridean way using wood paneling. The wood was often painted or papered over (in later years) but at Scarista the wood has been left in it's lovely natural state.
One of the really great things about this Hebrides self catering accommodation is the proximity to the beaches of Harris. One of the finest beaches on South Harris is only a couple of minutes walk from the rear of the blackhouse with a massive selection of other amazing beaches all within a few minutes driving distance.
